Do More 2024: Purpose-Driven Organizations We are Supporting in 2024

Updated: Jan 5

As we usher in the promises of a new year, RECLAIMthreads stands at the threshold of a transformative period—one fueled by intention, purpose, and a commitment to the core values that define us. The preceding years were a testament to our resilience, navigating the tumultuous tides of 2020 and grappling with big life changes. However, as we set our sights on 2024, our focus shifts from survival to a passionate embrace of our brand's ethos.

Education has been a driving force behind RECLAIMthreads since its inception, a catalyst for meaningful change and mindful consumerism. What started as connective conversations has now blossomed into a dedicated blog, a platform that extends the accessibility of our knowledge. In our articles, we delve into the profound environmental impact of the fast fashion industry, championing slow fashion brands as a counterforce.

Boycotting fast fashion is the step toward environmental harm reduction—a conviction that underscores our commitment to fostering change. However, we recognize that transformation extends beyond abstention; it involves leveraging our purchasing power to actively contribute to a more sustainable future.

In this spirit, RECLAIMthreads has researched and selected four environmental organizations to support in 2024: Earthjustice, champions of legal advocacy for the environment; Global Footprint Network, pioneering ecological balance; Pure Earth, dedicated to eradicating pollution and toxic waste; and Waste and Resources Action Programme (WRAP), at the forefront of promoting waste reduction.

Below we will provide a brief overview of each organization, why we chose them, and a link to their website so you can learn more about them.

Earthjustice is a nonprofit environmental law organization based in the United States. Founded in 1971, its mission is to use the power of the law to protect the environment, public health, and the well-being of communities. Earthjustice engages in legal battles to safeguard natural resources, combat climate change, and advocate for environmental justice.

Why we like them: We understand that the best way to protect the Earth from power-house industries is legally. Earthjustice fights for the people, the Earth, and the wildlife.

Key aspects of Earthjustice's work include:

  • Legal Advocacy: Earthjustice provides legal representation for environmental cases across a wide range of issues, including air and water quality, wildlife protection, public lands, climate change, and more. The organization often represents clients such as environmental groups, communities, and individuals who may not have the resources to navigate complex legal processes.

  • Litigation: Earthjustice files lawsuits against government agencies, corporations, and other entities that are involved in activities or policies that could harm the environment. The organization aims to hold those responsible accountable and seek legal remedies to prevent environmental damage.

  • Policy Advocacy: In addition to litigation, Earthjustice engages in advocacy efforts to shape environmental policies at the local, state, and national levels. This includes participating in regulatory processes, commenting on proposed rules, and working to strengthen environmental protections.

  • Environmental Justice: Earthjustice is committed to addressing environmental injustices, where vulnerable communities, often marginalized and low-income, bear a disproportionate burden of environmental harm. The organization works to ensure that all communities have equal protection under environmental laws.

  • Public Engagement: Earthjustice collaborates with the public to raise awareness about environmental issues and encourage public participation in the decision-making processes that impact the environment. This involves mobilizing support for environmental causes and fostering a broader understanding of the importance of environmental protection.

Earthjustice operates with a network of attorneys, scientists, and policy experts who collaborate to advance environmental causes through legal channels. The organization has been involved in landmark cases that have set legal precedents and contributed to the development of environmental law in the United States. Its work extends to various environmental challenges, including air and water pollution, biodiversity conservation, and the transition to a clean energy future.

Overall, Earthjustice plays a crucial role in the legal defense of the environment, seeking to ensure that the law is used as a tool for conservation and the protection of the planet.

The Global Footprint Network (GFN) is an international research organization that focuses on measuring and analyzing humanity's ecological footprint, as well as promoting sustainability and environmental awareness. The organization was founded in 2003 with the goal of providing a comprehensive metric, known as the Ecological Footprint, to assess how human activities impact the Earth's ecosystems.

The Ecological Footprint is a measure of the demand humans place on natural resources and ecosystems to support their lifestyle and consumption patterns. It is expressed in terms of global hectares (gha) or acres. The concept compares the planet's biocapacity—its ability to regenerate resources and absorb waste—with human demand.

Why we like them: The Global Footprint Network is an organization based in science. The data they compile emphasizes how urgently our global environmental impacts need to change.

Key components of the Ecological Footprint include:

  • Carbon Footprint: The amount of land and resources required to absorb the carbon dioxide emissions generated by human activities, particularly from the burning of fossil fuels.

  • Food Footprint: The land and resources needed to produce the food consumed by a population.

  • Housing Footprint: The ecological impact of constructing and maintaining buildings and infrastructure.

  • Goods and Services Footprint: The land and resources used in the production and consumption of goods and services.

The Global Footprint Network calculates the ecological footprint for individual countries, regions, and the entire planet. It also calculates "Earth Overshoot Day," which is the date when humanity's demand for ecological resources and services in a given year exceeds what the Earth can regenerate in that year. In recent years, Earth Overshoot Day has been occurring earlier in the calendar year, indicating that humanity is living beyond the planet's ecological means.

The Global Footprint Network seeks to raise awareness about sustainability issues, promote the concept of ecological limits, and encourage individuals, businesses, and governments to make more sustainable choices to reduce their ecological footprint. The organization works with various stakeholders, including policymakers, businesses, and the general public, to promote solutions for a more sustainable and resilient future.

Pure Earth is a non-profit organization dedicated to addressing and solving pollution problems in low- and middle-income countries. Founded in 1999 by Richard Fuller and Meredith Block, Pure Earth focuses on identifying and cleaning up polluted sites that pose health risks to communities, particularly in areas where industrial activities, mining, and improper waste disposal have led to severe environmental contamination.

Why we like them: PureEarth focuses on pollutants, primarily lead - a toxic chemical with a cyclical effect - poisoning homes, communities, children, water, and food.

Key aspects of Pure Earth's work include:

  • Pollution Assessment: Pure Earth conducts assessments to identify and quantify pollution in various communities. This involves evaluating the extent of contamination, understanding its sources, and assessing the associated health risks.

  • Site Remediation: The organization works on remediating polluted sites to reduce or eliminate environmental contamination. This often involves implementing technologies and methods to clean up soil, water, and air pollution.

  • Health Interventions: Pure Earth is committed to improving public health by addressing the impacts of pollution. This includes providing medical interventions and healthcare support to communities affected by pollution-related illnesses.

  • Capacity Building: The organization collaborates with local partners, governments, and communities to build capacity and raise awareness about pollution-related issues. This involves training local professionals and communities to address pollution problems more effectively.

  • Advocacy and Research: Pure Earth engages in advocacy efforts to raise awareness about the global impact of pollution on public health. The organization also conducts research to better understand the links between pollution and health and to identify innovative solutions.

Pure Earth addresses a range of pollutants, including heavy metals, pesticides, and other hazardous substances. The organization recognizes that pollution is a global problem that disproportionately affects vulnerable communities and is often linked to poverty. By addressing pollution at its source and working with local communities, Pure Earth aims to improve environmental quality and promote sustainable development.

In addition to its fieldwork, Pure Earth collaborates with governments, NGOs, and international agencies to develop policies and strategies to tackle pollution on a larger scale. The organization's efforts contribute to the achievement of Sustainable Development Goal 3, which focuses on ensuring healthy lives and promoting well-being for all at all ages.
